PRINCESS-CUT DIAMONDS: KEY FEATURES
Developed in the 1970s, the princess-cut diamond is a relatively new diamond shape. It’s the second-most popular diamond shape, next to round-cut diamonds. Learn more about the unique features of princess-cut diamonds and what makes them an attractive choice for engagement rings.
Shape
When viewed from above, princess-cut diamonds have a square or slightly rectangular shape, featuring four pointed corners. From the side, it resembles the shape of an inverted pyramid. A princess-cut diamond is typically made up of either 57 or 76 facets, with its unique design giving it plenty of sparkle.
Style
Compared to the soft, rounded edges of a cushion-cut diamond, which evokes a classic, romantic feel, the crisp lines of a princess-cut diamond offer a more contemporary, geometrical look. Princess-cut diamonds can also give the optical illusion of appearing bigger than a round-cut diamond of the exact same carat size. This is because the top (the table) of a princess-cut diamond is larger and the bottom (the pavilion) is smaller, giving it a larger diameter when measured from corner to corner.
Price
A princess-cut diamond is typically more affordable than a round-cut diamond. This is due to the fact that during the cutting process, the princess-cut shape doesn’t require as much material to be removed from the rough diamond. A princess-cut diamond retains about 80% of the rough diamond, whereas a round-cut diamond will only retain about 40%.
