Diamond Clarity

Diamond clarity refers to the presence of natural characteristics, known as inclusions and blemishes, that formed while the diamond was developing deep within the earth. Almost every diamond has some internal or external features, but many are so small that they can only be seen under magnification. Clarity is one of the Four Cs of diamond quality, along with cut, color, and carat weight, and it helps determine a diamond's overall appearance and value.

The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) grades diamond clarity on a scale ranging from Flawless (FL) to Included (I). At the top of the scale are Flawless and Internally Flawless diamonds, which have no visible inclusions under 10x magnification. Most diamonds sold for engagement rings fall within the Very Slightly Included (VS) and Slightly Included (SI) categories, offering an excellent balance of beauty and value. In many cases, inclusions in these grades are not visible to the naked eye.

It's important to remember that clarity is just one factor in a diamond's overall beauty. A diamond with a slightly lower clarity grade can still appear stunning and brilliant, especially if it has an excellent cut. Many shoppers choose eye-clean diamonds, meaning any inclusions are not noticeable without magnification, allowing them to prioritize other characteristics such as size or sparkle.
