Meet Slater

St Jude Patient Slater

Slater was 4 in 2018 when he was diagnosed with neuroblastoma, a pediatric cancer that
develops in certain types of nerve tissue. It was stage IV and spreading. At the time, five-year survival rates for neuroblastoma had been around 50% for a decade.

Slater was referred to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital®, where he fit the criteria for a clinical trial for patients with newly diagnosed, high-risk neuroblastoma. Using an approach called immunotherapy, this clinical trial aimed to find out if adding a specific antibody to the first rounds of chemotherapy could improve outcomes in children with neuroblastoma by helping the body target and kill the cancer cells. Treatment included chemotherapy, immunotherapy, proton beam radiotherapy and a bone marrow transplant.

Now in middle school, Slater attended his first dance, placed second in the science fair and discovered a love of digital media and animation. He likes to cook, play basketball and football, play video games, fish, ski, ice skate and hang out with his older brother, Sawyer.
