Necklaces: A basic wardrobe staple

Necklaces are an effortless accessory that can range from playful to bold to elegant. They also make for an easy gift because you don’t have to worry about fit! Beautiful on their own, necklaces also pair well together for a layered look. Before you get to styling, mixing, and matching, here is some basic information about necklaces.

Common Types of Necklaces

Chain:  A chain is a strand of links. It is the base for many types of necklaces, and it also can be worn alone. Though seemingly straightforward, there is a variety of chains with different types of links. Box, cable, rolo, and rope chains are most common for pendant necklaces. Figaro, curb, and wheat chains are often featured in men’s styles, but they are popular for women too. A few other popular chain types include beaded, franco, snake, and mariner, among others. Chains can range in length from 12 to 36 inches.

Pendant:  A pendant is a bauble, charm, or gemstone that hangs from the chain. Pendant options are almost limitless, making them one of the most varied and popular styles. The most common length for pendant necklaces is 16 to 18 inches.

Strand:  The most well-known example of this necklace is a strand of pearls. Strands feature back-to-back gemstones or beads of a similar size. Strands are typically 16 to 18 inches, but they can be longer as well.

Choker:  Chokers are short in length but bring lots of style. Worn close to the neck, the choker creates a dramatic look that can be amplified by pendants or gemstones. Chokers range from 12 to 16 inches.
